Pediatric flexor tendon injuries are similar to those seen in adults with a few exceptions. The post-operative treatment approach with pediatric patients has historically been largely different. Although the tendons of children are smaller than adults, there have been advances in surgical repair techniques that permit changes to the post-operative treatment. There is now evidence that early active motion protocols can be used with a cooperative child with a strong enough repair. This webinar will describe a phased treatment approach for a pediatric patient after flexor tendon repair in zone II. The outlined protocol cautiously progresses tendon gliding and joint mobility while respecting tissue healing. It highlights strategies to help improve home program compliance and orthotic use as well as suggests creative therapy ideas for this population. Supplemental information will be provided for home program instruction, fabrication of a pediatric dorsal blocking orthosis, and case presentation for a pediatric patient.

At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:
- Identify the surgical technique and one other aspect that are necessary to start early active motion with children.
- Describe the current recommended position of the wrist, MP joints and IP joints in an appropriate immobilization device after surgical repair of a flexor tendon.
- List two factors that should be assessed at each visit to determine pace of progression of your treatment protocol.
- Identify two strategies to help improve compliance home program and orthotic use for a pediatric patient who recently underwent surgical repair of the flexor tendon.
