Neuroplasticity as the Foundation for Treatment of Focal Hand Dystonia

Course Description:
This seminar will define focal hand dystonia, outline the prevalence and incidence, summarize the etiology based on multifactorial risk factors that interact to result in aberrant learning and functional impairments. This seminar will provide an overview to guide retraining the brain based on the principles of neuroplasticity.

Learning Objectives:

1. Attendees will understand:
   1. focal hand dystonia is a multi factorial problem
   2. loss of motor control is associated with degradation of neural sensorimotor organization from the cortex to the brain stem
   3. the need to reduce risk factors and maximize good health (nutrition, aerobic exercise, stress management to set the stage for retraining
   4. how to outline a plan for retraining based on integrating the principles of neuroplasticity to re differentiate the affected upper limb
2. Attendees will be able to
   1. outline ways to engage the limbic system, the cortex and the basal ganglia to increase inhibition and decrease excitation
