Webinar Description:
This webinar will provide an insight into the indications and relevant biomechanics of anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA). While TSA and RTSA have some similarities, there are some major differences in the surgical procedures, indications, post-operative precautions and rehabilitation processes. The webinar will review these key aspects and analyze biomechanical rationale for post-operative guidelines in concordance with current literature.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  1. Explore the indications for the anatomic and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty
  2. Identify the biomechanics and the surgical procedures involved in the ATSA and RTSA
  3. Recognize the concept of protecting pertinent healing structures in the immediate post-operative recovery, to prevent complications and optimize function
  4. Determine the optimum interventional processes during the protective immobilization phase, the controlled loading of the healing structures during the rehabilitative phase and the progressive strengthening during the advanced phase
  5. Identify the pertinent differences and clinical reasoning behind the post-operative guidelines – including accelerated and delayed rehabilitation programs

Ashim Bakshi, MHS, OTR, CHT

Ashim is a fellowship trained practicing clinician with more than 23 years of experience in treating conditions of the upper quadrant. He is the owner/clinical director of two outpatient clinics in Indiana and treats a myriad of diagnosis from complex hand trauma, sports injuries, and post-operative tendon repairs to subtle proximal nerve entrapment, shoulder micro instability, rotator cuff injuries and scapular dysfunctions.

Ashim is a consultant and adjunct faculty for the Doctor of Physical Therapy and Master of Occupational Therapy programs at Indiana State University. His teaching coursework at the University includes anatomy and biomechanics, advanced upper extremity conditions and orthotics fabrication. Ashim is also partner and principal at Advanced Rehab Seminars and has presented continuing education courses nationally and internationally on orthopedic shoulder, elbow and hand rehabilitation to various hospital systems and large clinic groups.

Ashim is an active member of the American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Therapists and American Society of Hand Therapists and has presented at multiple annual conferences. Ashim was one of the collaborative authors for the seminal paper on consensus guidelines of rehab for shoulder arthroplasty that was published in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery in 2020. More recently he was also an invited speaker at the 2021 Annual Meeting of American Society for Hand Therapists and is the invited speaker at the 2023 FESSH-EFSHT Congress in Rimini, Italy.
