Course Description:
What do I do with patients that hurt all over? Why can’t they pin-point their symptoms? Why do the carpal tunnel symptoms seem to keep coming back? Have you ever had patients like this? Then this is for you! This course is designed to assist practicing hand therapists in the identification, evaluation, and treatment of thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) using a manual therapy approach. Therapists will learn about the types of TOS, how to perform a TOS assessment, and gain an understanding of what to prioritize with the rehabilitation process.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the anatomy of the thoracic outlet region, and the 3 main areas of brachial plexus impingement: scalene triangle, costoclavicular space, and beneath the pect minor muscle.
  2. Identify the two different types of TOS clinical presentations: “compressors” (those who experience intermittent traction on the brachial plexus with overhead activity) and “releasers” (those who experience more of their symptoms at night.)
  3. Describe the basic clinical examination, including the following special tests: Roos test (Elevated Arm Stress Test), Cyriax release test, & Lindgren’s (Cervical Rotation Lateral Flexion) test.
  4. Describe neural flossing techniques for the median, radial, and ulnar nerves.
  5. Identify scapular faults that can contribute to TOS problems. Participants will also demonstrate how to test and treat posterior capsule tightness at the glenohumeral joint and will also become familiar with treatment interventions and home exercise programs.
